How to Wash Printed Shirts So the Design Lasts

Most printed shirts do not fail because of bad printing. They fail because of hot water, high-heat drying and an iron.
The five rules
- Turn it inside out. The single most effective thing you can do. It stops the print abrading against the drum and other garments.
- Wash cold. Under 30°C / 86°F. Heat is what opens fibers and lifts ink.
- Tumble dry low, or hang it. High heat is harder on a print than washing ever is.
- Never iron the print directly. Iron inside out, or press around it. Direct heat melts and glazes ink.
- Skip bleach and fabric softener. Bleach attacks pigment; softener leaves a residue that dulls the print over time.
By printing method
- DTG: ink sits in the fibers, so it fades gradually rather than cracking. Cold wash, low dry, and it outlasts the garment's shape.
- Screen print: a thin layer on top of the fabric. Durable, but can crack if repeatedly dried on high heat.
- Vinyl: the most fragile. Never iron it, never dry on high, and expect edges to lift eventually — it is the nature of the material.
- Embroidery: effectively indestructible, but wash inside out so the stitching does not snag.
The first wash
Wash a new printed garment on its own the first time. Dyed cotton, especially in deep colors, releases surplus dye in the first cycle. This has nothing to do with print quality and everything to do with dyeing — but it will happily transfer to something white.
What normal aging looks like
A well-cared-for DTG print softens slightly over the first few washes and then stabilizes. That initial change is the ink settling into the fabric, not a defect. What is not normal is cracking, flaking, or the design lifting at the edges within a few washes — that indicates under-curing, and a reputable supplier will replace it.
