Team shirts have one complication other group orders do not: every shirt is slightly different, because every shirt has a different name and number on it.
Why personalization changes the maths
Screen printing gets cheap at volume because one stencil prints many identical shirts. The moment each shirt needs a different name, that advantage collapses — printers handle it with heat transfer vinyl applied individually, which is priced per shirt.
So the usual rule flips:
- Identical shirts, 25+: screen printing, clearly cheapest
- Named and numbered shirts: the volume discount largely disappears — compare quotes properly
- Under 15, named: print on demand is usually competitive and far less hassle
Playing kit versus supporter shirts
These are different products and people conflate them.
- Actual play: you want moisture-wicking polyester, not cotton. Cotton holds sweat and gets heavy. Note that DTG printing does not bond well to polyester — this is a genuine limitation, and a specialist sports printer is the right supplier.
- Supporters, coaches, post-match: cotton tees, hoodies and sweatshirts are ideal, and this is where print on demand fits well.

Rosters that change
Players join and leave mid-season. Bulk orders lock you into a fixed set of names, and the leftover shirts belong to people who left.

Design that works at distance
Team designs are read from across a field, not across a table. Bold shapes, high contrast, one focal element. Numbers should be large and use a typeface where 6 and 8 are clearly distinguishable. Avoid thin outlines and gradients.
