"AI clothing design" means three different things depending on who is selling it, and only one of them ends with a garment arriving at your door. This guide explains the three, what you can realistically design, how to write the prompt, and where AI still falls short.
The three kinds of AI clothing design

What you can design with AI today
- Graphics on garments: illustrations, cartoons, lettering, badges, patterns, printed on t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts and caps. This is mature and works well.
- All-over patterns: possible on some print-on-demand products, not on standard cotton tees.
- Not yet: the cut, fabric, seams or fit of a garment. AI can draw a jacket; it cannot pattern-cut one. Anyone promising an AI-designed garment silhouette is selling a picture.

How the design-to-garment flow works
- Describe the design in one or two sentences.

The two technical rules
Resolution
General-purpose AI image tools output around 1,000 pixels wide, which is roughly a 3-inch print at good quality. Anything larger looks soft. A design-to-garment store generates at print resolution or upscales before printing; if you use a standalone tool, upscale to at least 4,000 pixels on the long edge before uploading anywhere.
Background
If the design has a white or coloured background, that background prints as a box on the shirt. Say "no background" or "transparent background" in the prompt, and check the preview on a dark garment colour: if you see a rectangle, the background is still there.

Copyright and what to avoid
Do not prompt for named characters, brands, sports teams or celebrities. The output infringes even if it looks original, and print services will reject it. Original subjects in a style you describe are fine. See can you sell AI-generated designs for the legal detail.
Where AI clothing design still falls short
- Text accuracy. Long sentences come out misspelled. Keep printed text to a few words, and check every letter in the preview.
- Exact likenesses. A cartoon of "my dad" from a description will look like a dad, not your dad. A photo is better for exact faces; see custom photo t-shirts.
- Specific colour matching. The AI cannot hit a Pantone reference. Describe colours in plain words and accept a close match.
- Garment shape. As above: the shirt is the shirt. AI designs the print, not the cut.
